Red eyes, sore feet, hoarse throat, but wasn’t that was a great Thanksgiving Festival! Pete’s Posse gave us driving, creative music, and Mary Wesley’s choice of dances was perfectly matched to their style: quick, economical teaching, great moves, and out of the way so the dancers connected directly to the music. And the Extreme English session was great – Tempest and David Smukler really showed us how it should be done. Not to mention the other great sessions. All in all, a fabulous time! Thanks to the volunteers who helped make it happen, and thanks to all of the dancers for the welcoming community that is Rochester. Keep on dancing all year long – see you at the dance!
Music by Pete’s Posse & Tempest (with horns!)

We’re so looking forward to Rochester’s Thanksgiving Festival this year. We have a great lineup this year. Pre-register now for the whole weekend.
We start Friday at 7:30 PM with Contras. There’s more on Saturday from 9:30 AM, with Extreme English, Contras, music jams and more. We finish up with the big Contra Saturday evening. It’s the perfect way to dance off some Thanksgiving calories! See the schedule.Twin fiddles in tight, wild harmony over high-powered guitar and pounding footwork with mandolin, clawhammer banjo, jawharp and rocking keyboards adding their voices to the mix. Songs and tunes, old and new, lyrical and driving: that’s the multi-generational heart and mind of PETE’S POSSE, at work and at play.
And, we’ll have both jazzy, rockin’ Contras and Extreme English with Americana band TEMPEST. Representing a wide range of experience, they draw deep from the well of American music to create a powerful dance experience.
Leading the dances will be Vermont “Dance Dame” MARY WESLEY. Mary shares her infectious love of contras and squares with dancers up and down the East Coast. And we’ll also have Syracuse caller DAVID SMUKLER. With his wide knowledge of fun dances, David will be leading both English and contras.
CDR is pleased to announce that popular musician & teacher Tim Ball will teach intermediate-level musicians how to play for an English Country Dance. Any melody instrument is appropriate for this workshop. Register now – there are only 10 spots available! The workshop fee is only $10. Join Tim on Sunday, November 13, 2016, from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm at First Baptist Church, 175 Allens Creek Rd, Rochester, NY 14618. Flyer here. Reply to Lisa Brown with your name, instrument, and contact information.

This morning, June 21, 2016, a lively band of CDR dancers met at dawn under the full moon to dance with 13 WHAM & Fox Rochester’s Alexis Arnold. We had a great time showing Alexis and the television audience what Contra and English Country Dance are all about. You can see the video on the Fox Rochester web site. Many thanks to Lisa Brown for making the connection with the station and getting the word out, and also to musicians Dick Bolt and Jane Knoeck giving us lively tunes, and to callers Margaret Mathews and Richard Sauvain.
Having a hard time convincing your friends to try a dance? Community dancing is more fun when lots of people participate, and we know word of mouth is our best form of advertising. But sometimes new dancers need a little extra encouragement before they’ll give it a shot. So for a limited time only, Country Dancers of Rochester is running a promotion in which members can submit their friends to receive a FREE first-time Dancer pass to any regular weekly CDR event. Eligible recipients will receive a card with your personal message, information about CDR events, and a free pass that they can use at any regular-priced weekly dance.
